Scripture: John 14:6-14
Key verse: (14) 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
Reflection: I will boldly follow Jesus anywhere but I am also the first to be skeptical of someone who throws around the name of Jesus. Christians have done many things “in the name” of Jesus over the years and we have to own the fact that they are not always positive. The all-important phrase “In the name,” used here in the gospel of John, doesn’t mean we can add Jesus to anything we want.
A name is sacred in many cultures and reveals character. A name is powerful. Since we pray “In the name of Jesus,” we need to get to know Jesus and his character. When we end our prayers “in the name of Jesus,” we are entering into a life that was about loving people on the edges of society and taking risks to lift up the most vulnerable. Praying “in the name of Jesus” not only draws us into the character of Christ but into an adventure with Christ.
Prayer: God, help me and all of those who call on Jesus’ name to know the deep love of Christ. May that love be our guide in all we do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
