Scripture: John 14:1-14
Key verses: (11-12) 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
Reflection: Easter Monday. The church office is closed and staff are resting after a full Holy Week. The flowered cross, while stunning yesterday in the morning, was wilted and a little bedraggled by the afternoon. The flowers were disposed of and the cross put back in storage for another year. Public schools are back in session today. Come Tuesday all will be back to normal, in a sense.
Is it true for you? Is Easter over? What difference does it make that the tomb was empty yesterday? We heard the story again, how the women came to the tomb to minister to Jesus’ dead body, perhaps to mourn. The discovery of an empty space, where they had expected death, was confusing and frightening. Then to find Jesus alive again, with a message of grace and new life and forgiveness to go tell others — it was beyond words.
Easter Monday for those first disciples wasn’t business as usual. Everything had changed. Some believed. Some doubted. Disagreements about what to do about the good news, and who to tell, and how, began almost immediately. But something new had started. A gospel movement that changed the world began in earnest on Easter Monday. While I love that the church office is closed on this day, I wonder if this is perhaps not a day we ought to celebrate too. This is the day the church got to work. And there is still much work to be done in the name of Jesus.
Let’s get busy.
Prayer: Lord, everything is new. Keep the power of your Easter resurrection alive in me, and in your Church. Help us do more than celebrate it once a year. Help us know it and live it and share it. Live in and through us, we pray. In the name of the risen Lord. Amen.
