Scripture: Psalm 116

Key verses: (17-18) I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

Reflection: I survived!  You know that feeling? It might be at the end of a long week when a big project is finally complete. It might be when you walk into your home after days in the hospital. It might be waking up in the morning to realize that your infant slept all the way through the night. It might be a warm hug beside the luggage carousel in the airport.

The writer of the psalm knows that feeling and responds with thanksgiving. When we get there, we might say (not necessarily with holiness) “Thank God!” and the psalmist agrees! What do you thank God for today? And how do you express your thanksgiving? The psalmist commits to making an offering. As people of faith, we are called to make our own offerings of thanksgiving. We look back over our lives and see how God has been at work. Often hindsight enables us to see God’s Spirit moving in ways we miss in the actual moment. God carried us through the crisis. God gave us the strength to face something we never imagined we would face. God surrounded us with support through an illness or in the midst of grief. God equipped the right person to say the right thing at the right time in our lives.

Take time now to give thanks to God and consider how you will express your gratitude in practical ways. God doesn’t protect faithful people from facing difficulty but God promises to journey with us through every difficulty. We can trust that God will not abandon us no matter what. Our faith can give us peace and contentment, knowing that God is there.

Prayer: Thank you, dear Lord, for the countless ways you have worked in my life. Deepen my trust in your presence. Teach me to offer my gifts to you with gratitude and with joy. Through Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
