Scripture: Psalm 62
Key verses: (5-6)
5 For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
Reflection: When was the last time you sat in silence and listened? Not listened to the radio, or to the TV, or to music, but listened to silence? It’s something many of us do far too little. We fill our spaces and our heads with background noise and distraction. It’s not all bad. Music can be a way God speaks to us. Staying current on news and events is responsible citizenship. Some TV shows and movies are entertaining or educational. There is reason to value their noise, some of the time.
But today’s scripture invites us to also value silence. In a time of distress, the Psalmist waits in silence, trusting and hoping in God. It is in silence that the knowledge of God’s steadfastness is understood. In the middle of a season of Christmas carols, commercialism, and cultural chaos, take some time to sit in silence. Listen to it. Sink down into it. What might God say to you in and through the silence?
Prayer: O God, for you my soul waits in silence. You alone are my rock and my salvation. Open my ears to hear your voice. In the name of Christ I pray. Amen.
