Scripture: Mark 6:47-56
Key verses: (50, 51) for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Then he got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded
Reflection: The disciples didn’t know where Jesus had gone or what he was doing. They had just witnessed the feeding of the 5,000 and were overwhelmed with all they had seen. The crowd had gotten a little overwhelmed or excited so Jesus made his disciples get in the boat. They didn’t know what was coming next. They never really knew with Jesus.
In the middle of the night, they were struggling against the wind and darkness. They saw someone walking to them. Terrified, they asked if this was a ghost? With a calm voice, Jesus told them not to be afraid. Jesus walked toward them on the lake and got into the boat. The wind died down. I am sure they still didn’t know what was going on.
Maybe following Jesus is not about being able to explain it all. Could it be that following Jesus is about showing up? Just showing up.
During this season of Lent, we continue with our commitments. We show up and follow Jesus. Even if we can’t explain what is happening.
Prayer: God, help me to not be afraid when you do new things in my life, in the church and in the world. Amen.
