Scripture: Mark 9: 2-13

Key verses: (5-8) Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved;[c] listen to him!” 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

Reflection: Lent is when we recognize the Transfiguration of the Lord, because this event marked a transition in Jesus’ ministry in which Jesus began to make the journey to Jerusalem.  The disciples needed this moment to be assured that Jesus is the hope of the ages. We need this moment.

The transfiguration is “luminous,” shining the light of revelation on Jesus. The disciples finally understand Jesus is the son of God and they don’t want to leave the mountain. On the mountain, as at Jesus’ baptism, God claims him as a beloved child, in whom God is well pleased. However, this time he adds the command, “listen to him.” We are commanded to listen to Jesus, not just to be present with him.

“We celebrate this mystery in order that our faith may be renewed. We are transformed into the new being in Christ as we join Christ in his death and resurrection in Lent and Easter.” says the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Geneva Press, 2003, 148-149). Let us continue this walk to the cross and hold tight to the hope.

Prayer: Almighty God, As we journey through Lent, help us to grow closer to you and to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Let our Lenten sacrifices truly become blessings to deepen our faith and walk with Christ. Amen.
