Scripture: John 14:18-31
Key verse: (27) “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
Reflection: Our world has a way of manufacturing anxiety. There is never enough; not enough time, not enough energy, not enough money, not enough. This sense of scarcity creates an illusion that if there was enough, then our anxiety would be eased. If we had more time, more energy, more money, then we would be less anxious. This is the way the world seeks attempts to give peace.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Why? Because the problem is not the supply, it is the demand. Finding “more” doesn’t ease anxiety, it has a way of compounding it. Jesus provides his disciples with a different kind of peace — “not as the world gives.” This peace is born of the gift of His love. That love is made manifest in “The Advocate,” the Holy Spirit Christ provides us. His love is all we need. His love is the antidote to a world that creates constant anxiety by generating insatiable demand. His love is enough, so we know peace.
Prayer: Thank you for the gift of your love, O God. May that peace that passes all understanding guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
