Scripture: Matthew 27:55-66

Key verse: (65) “Pilate said to them, ‘You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.’”

Reflection: The world was focused on the outside of the tomb while God was at work on the inside!

The tomb of Jesus was secure. Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus’ dead body, wrapped in it in cloth and laid it in his own new tomb, hewn in a rock.  Then Joseph rolled a great stone over the door of the tomb and went away. The next day, the religious leaders remembered that Jesus had predicted his own resurrection so they went to Pilate to request additional security at the tomb. They wanted to be sure that the disciples didn’t fake a resurrection by stealing the body. The religious leaders had their own soldiers and stationed guards outside the tomb to keep watch. The tomb of Jesus was secure.

The world was focused on the outside of the tomb while God was at work on the inside!  This is the good news of resurrection. God is at work despite all outward appearances.  God is at work to redeem and restore. God is at work to give second chances (and third, and fourth, and…). God is at work to create new life.

When everything looks hopeless, when you wonder if God has abandoned you, when you can’t see a way forward, remember that God is at work on the inside. When there’s a great stone in the doorway, when there are guards watching the tomb, remember that God is at work on the inside. Death does not have the final word. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord – no stones, no guards, no defeat, no tragedy. Love wins! Thanks be to God for that powerful love at work!
