Scripture: Luke 7:18-35
Key verses: (18-19) 18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”
Reflection: John the Baptist was pretty audacious to send his disciples to Jesus. They watched to see what Jesus was doing and asked him if he was “the ONE.” It was not a question out of frustration but from a deep and abiding faith. John wanted to know if Jesus was the Messiah. If not, he would keep looking because John was focused on one thing. He was working to bring about the Kingdom of God.
John’s disciples reported that Jesus was healing the lame, restoring sight to the blind, preaching to the poor and even raised someone from the dead. John had to decide, as we do, if this was the Messiah based on these stories.
The John the Baptist that I read in scriptures was passionately political, challenging and confrontational. I wonder if his cousin Jesus was challenging John the Baptist to broaden his vision of the Kingdom. A Kingdom where love guides us and there is good news for all people.
Prayer: God, guide us in our Kingdom living and loving. Amen.
