Scripture: Matt 5:38-48

Key verse: (48) Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Reflection: It is a simple imperative that Jesus gives to love your enemies.  Our scripture starts off with reminding us that we have heard it said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” That is certainly true today.  Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Love everybody.

I would like to ask Jesus if that includes some particular people who are frustrating, mean or just make me exhausted. Everybody means everybody. God’s kingdom doesn’t work like other kingdoms. It has a different set of values and challenges our day-to-day interactions.  What if love is at the heart of every decision and every interaction today? Interactions with family, close friends and even strangers that are rooted in love bring about this kingdom.

Maybe today, the most difficult people in your life will not cross your path. Offer a prayer for them, praying that they know love today.  Offer that prayer for yourself that you may know love today.  Loving our enemies is hard but that is not all Jesus is asking of us. Jesus is asking us to be intentional about loving everybody. Yes, everybody.

Prayer: God, surround me with your love. Give me courage to live in love. Today and every day with every one of your children. In your son’s name I pray. Amen.
