Scripture: Luke 9: 51-62
Key verses: (57-60) As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Reflection: Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) wrote a faithful and uncomfortable book, The Cost of Discipleship (1948). The title of Bonhoeffer’s book represents what it means to follow. Bonhoeffer was one of the few German clergymen to stand up against Hitler’s rise to power and he paid for it with his life. Discipleship is costly.
Jesus tells his disciples that following means taking up the cross. When it comes to following Jesus, you have to be all in.
The man in this scripture might not have known what it meant to be all in when he said, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus’ reply to him isn’t encouraging. “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Was this a bit harsh or just reality?
Jesus has left his family home in Nazareth and there is no going back. Jesus doesn’t offer wealth or comfort or security. He simply says, if you’re coming with me, it will probably be hard.
We might need to hear these harsh words. We have to remember that we do not follow Jesus in order that everything will be good, happy and abundant. We follow Jesus because we know there will be hard times. We follow Jesus so that we might be transformed by his love. We follow Jesus so we might have life. Abundant life full of joy and sadness, good days and bad days.
Prayer: God, in your love you have called us to know you, led us to trust you, and follow you with our lives. Give us strength so that we may walk in the way of Christ and grow in the knowledge of your love. Amen.
