Scripture: Heb. 11:1-12
Key verses: (1-3) 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.
Reflection: The Confirmation class will be interviewed next week by the session of the church. They will share their faith statements with the elders. In many ways, I think their faith is similar to the faith of the people the writer of Hebrews is writing about.
The Hebrews needed their faith. They didn’t need to be recognized for it because it made them feel good or so others could see their faithfulness. They were being persecuted and they needed their faith to endure. They held their faith with strong convictions.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Our 8th graders hold their faith with strong convictions. They are looking ahead to things that are not seen, a church that does not exist yet but one they yearn for with urgency. They will stand before you at the end of the month and promise to live out that faith to bring about the kingdom. Maybe the things not seen will come into view.
Prayer: God, the church doesn’t look like I hoped it would, so help us be a better body of Christ. Guide us to be love. To offer compassion. To listen. To do justice. To work for the kingdom. God, help us live into hope. Amen.
