Scripture: Psalm 27

Key verse: (1) “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Reflection: Today’s psalm, often attributed to King David, is full of some imagery that sounds foreign to us. He is asking God for protection from his enemies, adversaries and foes. This prayer/song was a reminder to him that in the midst of his anxiety and fear about being attacked, God would provide shelter. God would conceal and protect him from everything that threatened him; hear his cries for help and calm his anxious heart. The psalm ends with the affirmation – “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD.” There is uncertainty in our country right now because of an enemy called COVID 19. We can’t see it, but we know it’s there. Many people around the world have died and hearts have been broken by grief. Many people are afraid of what tomorrow will bring. For some this has led to incredible generosity; for others tremendous anxiety that has led to panic. In these days when the way we go about daily life is changing, we need God to light our way and give us strength. The Psalms acknowledge the full range of human experience and emotion reminding us of what really matters. God is stronger than our fears or struggles and will continue to be our light and salvation – the stronghold of our lives. This doesn’t mean we will escape all suffering – life is more complicated than that. But, it does mean we have the resources of our faith to guide us; and hope and love to sustain us. May God continue to lift you up and strengthen your faith today and every day. Wait for the LORD.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for your enduring presence. Remind us to place our trust and hope in you. Help us walk in your ways and not lose heart. Give us the strength and courage we need to face the events of this day and the days ahead. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
