Scripture: Psalm 147:1-11

Key verses: (8-9)

8   He covers the heavens with clouds,
          prepares rain for the earth,
makes grass grow on the hills.
9   He gives to the animals their food,
and to the young ravens when they cry..

Reflection: One day in middle school, I remember how fascinated I was to hear that the amount of water on earth neither decreases nor increases, it only changes forms. I was amazed. I questioned, “What if I spit on the ground?” “What about the ice in my refrigerator?” “What if water molecules escape the atmosphere?” That last question was not from my years in middle school; this question is being asked nowadays with our continuous learning about climate change — that is a conversation for another day.

This memory of middle school science came to mind when reading Psalm 147. It reminded me what a gift rain is. If the amount of water never changes, there has to be a supplier. That supplier must have known and understood the benefit of water; more specifically, the benefit of rain falling from the sky. It is not a rushing river alone. Water falls from the sky to nourish the plants below. God is the Supplier. This psalmist sings praises to God for the gift of rain — perhaps not in middle school science — and the provision of God for creation and growth. The psalmist encourages hearers to praise God because God cares for creation, by providing nourishment and food to plants and animals alike, even the smallest of birds. I wonder how we might be still, listen and reflect, and better understand the gift that is rain. I wonder what you might do next time it rains. Perhaps, you could take a few moments to say a prayer of thanksgiving for the nourishment God is providing — for plants, for animals, and for us.

Praise be to God!

Prayer: Holy Supplier, the giver and creator of water, we give you thanks for the gift of rain. I pray for the waters may fall softly upon the earth, to provide nourishment for your creation, and may we sing songs of praise in return. Amen.
