Scripture: Matthew 1:1,17
Reflection: The scripture from Matthew 1: 1; 17 is Jesus’ genealogy. Jesus’ family tree includes a rather long list of a cast of characters. Some were holy, but there were also sinners and outcast, yet each member of Jesus’s family tree was part of God’s plan. He purposefully included unexpected people to show his grace and love. The family lineage traces Jesus all the way back to Abraham, which spanned thousands of years. During advent, we wait in anticipation of the coming of Jesus similar to how generations of families waited for Jesus so many years ago. Ultimately God’s promise came true with the birth of Jesus.
In the season of Advent, it is easy to be swept up in the chaos of gift giving, managing busy schedules, navigating complex family dynamics, and losing focus on the true meaning of Christmas. This scripture is a beautiful reminder that Christ came regardless of our past, our mistakes, or our sins. God loves each one of us unconditionally. As we wait in anticipation of the coming of Christ, let us be grounded and find hope in God’s faithfulness and promise.
Prayer: Holy God, help quiet the noise around us by reminding us of your promise. Help us to stay focused on what is important and open our hearts and eyes to you. May we see your love and grace around every corner and be lifted up by your faithfulness and love.
