Scripture: Isaiah 40:5
Reflection: There seem to be very few things we all experience together. And not just because we’ve spent the majority of 2020 socially distanced from one another, but because each of us are accustomed to living our own stories with our own triumphs, mistakes, ambitions, and inside jokes. We’re all living similarly complex lives, and our stories intersect at precious few moments.
The verse for today says, “All people shall see [the glory of the Lord] together.” Together. I miss together. And although I love them dearly, I don’t mean the togetherness of my family or staff here at MPPC. I mean the emotional, collective together of a shared experience.
Like, the first time I watched Ratatouille, I totally cried. And I knew that little rat had also cooked his way into the whole theater’s heart and we were all emotional. Maybe that’s too specific, but that’s the kind of together I love.
And guess what? We’re kind of together right now. Even though we’ve done this Advent thing loads of times and we know what happens on Christmas Eve, we choose to walk through Advent together, week-by-week. We light one candle at a time. We desperately want to sing “Joy to the World” but know it’s not quite time. We’re waiting for the glory of the Lord to be revealed. Our storylines are coming into alignment. We’re all waiting, together.
Prayer: Dear God, you know our hearts, our stories, and all the craziness that our lives entail. Help us center our lives on you. Align our complexities to this moment, knowing that together, we’ll soon celebrate the glory of the Lord revealed in Jesus Christ. Amen.
