Scripture: Isaiah 9:2
Reflection: In 2018 I released an album titled “Alpenglow.” I wanted to build on the theme referenced in the title, the rosy color in the sky at sunset and sunrise, and write an album about journeying through seasons of darkness. I think we would all agree that 2020 has been quite a season of darkness for most people around the world. And yet, the idea behind Advent, as well as the idea of my album, is that darkness never has the last word. There is an ever-present promise within Christianity that there is always a light on the horizon. The sun will always rise. I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes we are worn down by the long seasons of waiting for the light to come, but in this Advent season let us stay awake and keep faith that God’s ever-present promise is still true. When the trials of darkness seem too overwhelming to endure, let us remember that there is a rosy color on the horizon, a daily reminder that the sun is rising. Let us remember that the light is coming.
Prayer: God, we come broken down by the trials of the past year. Give us the strength to carry on despite the darkness around us, and help us to keep our eyes open to your light on the horizon. In your name we pray. Amen.
