Scripture: Psalm 33

Key verses: (20-22)
Our soul waits for the Lord;
    he is our help and shield.
21 Our heart is glad in him,
    because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Reflection: The psalmist reminds us that we can be both in awe and frustrated by God.  It is easy to be in awe of God, when we notice the God-movement or God-moments in our lives. It is also really easy to get frustrated with God when we have some great plans that don’t fit into God’s plan.  In verse 10, God “frustrates the plans of the people.”  The psalmist reminds us that we do not rely on ourselves and this is where we find hope.  God’s love never fails. If you have four calendars and live by the to-do list, take a deep breath and here the good news. You are not alone.

When our hope is grounded in God, we know that God will sustain us through all of life. When struggles arise, our hope in God remains. When hardships threaten us, our hope in God remains. Our plans as good as they are, cannot sustain us with the depth of love and hope that God offers. God loves us, sees us, knows us, claims us and promises to be with us in this life and the next.  This is where and in whom our hope resides.

Prayer: God, help us embrace your unfailing love more than the security of schedules and order.  Renew our hope in you to you and everyday. Amen.
